Having read and enjoyed other Vivian Vande Velde books, I figured this would be a sure bet. I was wrong. It wasn’t bad, but one must prepare herself to read a campy, somewhat sugar-coated medieval fantasy. Even for a middle-grade book it seemed unnaturally wholesome and the pacing was laborious. This book, unless one is genuinely in a mood for brain cotton-candy, can quickly lead to boredom.

Aw, I’m disappointed to hear it. I loved “Heir Apparent”.
I have “Heir Apparent” on my shelf, but haven’t read it yet. When I finished “Being Dead” I instantly wanted to read more of her work and stocked up. So far, I’ve read and thoroughly enjoyed her fairytale reboots in “Tales From the Brothers Grimm and Sisters Weird”, “Companions of the Night” and I’m desperately wanting to read “Stolen”, too. (From what I can tell, she’s a prolific author.)
