Wordle, Wordle, Wordle…

I have no idea why, but when I think of Wordle, that episode of the Smurfs where Tailor Smurf says, “Needle, needle, needle!” over and over pops into my head. (Yeah, that’s totally random and has absolutely nothing to do with this blog post.)

Anyhoo, I blame thank Ana for turning me back on to this nifty timesuck. Basically, it’s a visual representation of your writing and I’ve been plugging in various stories and tweaking the output for the better part of an hour. Boatloads of awesomesauce.

Oh, You Thought the Word of the Day was an Actual Existing Word? Sorry.

One of my great pleasures in life is checking the Dictionary.com app on my iPhone for the ‘Word of the Day’. If I like the word, I’ll add it to my favorites.

And it just so happened that I liked that day’s WotD.

Too bad the word didn’t seem to exist…at least, not in the Dictionary.com database. Oops.

Instead of Writing 001: Sigane

This is what I was doing instead of writing…

Sigane Drawing

At least it’s related to my current WIP. (Sigane is one of the characters in Night Princesses.)

Sunday Stacks 001

Sunday is the day of rest and reading, and these are the books in my stacks for this week.

Entwined by Heather DixonWither by Lauren DeStefanoRotters by Daniel KrausGraveminder by Melissa Marr

I’ve already started Entwined by Heather Dixon…it’s slow going. As I eased into chapter 4, I wished I were more into it because I adore her blog, and the writing there is pure hilarity. But I eventually set it aside and picked up Wither* by Lauren DeStefano, which is fairing much better. When I finish that, I’m looking forward to Rotters by Daniel Kraus, which already has some glowing reviews, and Graveminder by Melissa Marr, although I didn’t love Wicked Lovely.

*I am absolutely smitten by the Wither cover.

Captivating Covers 001

Sometimes I’ll come across a book that makes me want to buy it just because of its cover. I resist the urge mind you—I must at least read the description and possibly a review or two first—but I’m still enamoured of the cover.

Rather than glance at these gems and move on with life, I’ll post them for later reference.

SFP: Night Princesses, Stuck on Chapter 12

OK, I’m not really stuck. So, I went back and finished chapter 11 although I said I was going to pause and write chapter 12. Now that I’m actually writing chapter 12, it’s slow going. Not because I don’t know what’s going to happen in this chapter, but because…I dunno…I’m being lazy about getting it written. ‘-_-,

Anyhoo, enough rambling, more SFP. Again, this will be a few more than the first paragraph because the first few paragraphs are short-ish.

By torchlight, Caydn packed his satchel, making sure he’d have enough food and water for an entire day away from the castle.

“I’d like to come with you,” Danisse said, startling him. He turned around and sighed. “I’m sorry,” she continued. “It seems I still have the bad habit of frightening you.”

“We should get a bell to place around your neck.”

She smiled. It warmed him whenever she smiled a genuine smile, which always seemed fleeting on her dark lips.

Actually, I am excited about this chapter because we get to know a little bit more about Danisse, one of the MC’s, and what Caydn, the other MC, truly thinks of her. This should be revealing.

SFP: Night Princesses, Continuing Chapter 11

Progress, progress, progress. That’s what I’m making. Hooray!

I was able to finish not only chapter 9, but also chapter 10. Now I’m working on chapter 11, which will be sponsoring today’s SFP. Actually, it will be the first three paragraphs since the first two are pretty sparse, being dialogue and all.

“Where have you been?” Ivor asked as soon as Bria walked through the front door.

She looked away from him and readjusted her shawl. “I was at home.”

Ivor’s nostrils flared. What tenuous hold he had on his temper was lost; he slammed his fist into the table. “That’s not your home. This–” he gestured around the room “–is your home. You are not to go back there again. What do I have to do to make you understand, Bria? Should I have one of the sentries burn it down?” He wavered on the final sentence, afraid she might say yes, afraid that he might actually have to burn it down, the last place he’d seen his son laughing. But, if it came to that, at least he still had his memories. Bria should have been content that she had those as well.

I’m about halfway through chapter 11, but oddly enough, I’m going to set it aside for a moment and start working on chapter 12. (I can do that because the chapters alternate between two different storylines. Sort of.)

Word Counts Are Hellspawn

My Official Writing Blog (the hard copy) Cover From My Official Writing Blog (the hard copy) dated 03.14.11

Ever since my first NaNoWriMo I’ve had an irrational fear of word counts. Don’t have enough words? Too bad, you fail; what you’ve written barely qualifies as a short story. Or so says the raspy-voiced lady in my head. (I should tell her to quit smoking before she loses a lung.)

I set these ambitious word count goals for my projects, like 50,000 or 75,000, and I think to myself, what’s the point? I could probably dribble out 50,000 words in my sleep, but it would drive me batshit if 99% of them were crap. Other writers—better writers—probably wouldn’t care. Those 49,500 craptastic words would be made shiny during editing.

But that is where my phobia is: having to waylay those 49,500 (or even 24,750) words and come up with an equal number of new words. It’s debilitating to think about. I’d rather build it out, adding layers with each edit.

Rather than debilitate myself, I’m looking at writing milestones, such as complete chapters, rather than word count milestones. Sure I’ll still check word counts, but it’s mostly vanity. When all the chapters are complete I’ll go back and add the layers.
